Clyde is a cat-burglar that not only steals cat toys, but also… your heart! This little guy is based off of my own cat, I enjoyed personifying his hilarious antics and toy preferences. Process pictures below! :>

Clyde Process

Sketch

I start with a sketch and a quick value block in. The value block in helps me with my coloring process, I just use clipping masks to keep my shapes clean.

Color Block-in

I then lay in the local colors. It was at this stage I noticed I didn’t like how close up Clyde was to the viewer just shrank him a bit as to not crowd frame. After The colors are laid in, I turn off my line layer and start the next step.

Establish Light/Dark

The next step I do is establish my lighting so I can start finding the form of the big shapes. You can see I started adding shadows to the head and blocking out the fluff into big shapes. This helps me understand how to start painting them.

Finding Form

Here, I repeated the last two steps on the toys, color block in and then established the lighting. On Clyde I have rendered him about as far as I wanted him to be, so I just go back and add some local colors and play around with soft and sharp edges.
